Doctor Who to the Big Screen Pt. 2

Yes, much like Steven Moffat I am a fan of posting my thoughts in two-parters. But I guess this shouldn’t really be thought of a two-parter. This is more like a follow-up post. I’ve had some time to think about this interesting idea and possibility of a massive Doctor Who film franchise. I mean the last massive franchise out of the UK was some little film like Harry Potter. So not much hype to live up to? Well you’re wrong! There’s a lot that needs to be covered and answered.

1. Who will play the Doctor? (WHO DAMMIT!?!?)
2. I’m calling out the timey-wimeyness of this franchise. When will it take place? After 11? Before 1?
3. If you do the first in a three-year process, will the others take as long?

Just a few to mention, you get the picture. But, I’ve given some thought to this. I’m not quite sure if it’s just the tumultuous amounts of caffeine flowing through me right now, but I’m really digging on the idea of combining the show and the film. There wasn’t much talk of doing so. But after brewing on conversations that I had on the day this report came out, I’m really excited. Yes I’d currently be disappointed if the Doctor wasn’t played by Matt Smith. However, if it were to be played by a new actor, who then took over the roll on the television show, I’d be on board. Continuity is what I’m hoping for. Yes, I know… continuity on Doctor Who? Am I mad? Perhaps.

But imagine this, say this, we get Matt (or a new Doctor) for the next 3-4 years. To which he regenerates in the film. It can be told in a story like, flashback sequence even! Hmm.. that may be the answer to get David Tennant and Chris Eccleston back in the swing of things. But imagine that, culminating a “Who” story on a huge movie like this every couple of years. That’d be huge. I’d pay $10 to see that movie every few years. I know every Whovian would. Don’t lie, it’s not good to lie.

But what I’m saying is that I’m on board. I’d like to see the Time War on a ginormic screen. I’d ignore which Doctor we saw. It’s obvious that we can’t see a guy like Tom Baker in the role, but having open your mind and try to have fun with the ideas that are possible when you don’t see time in such a straight line. I mean come on, it’s more like a big ball of timey…wimey… yeahhh.

Doctor Who Heading to the Big Screen?

A couple of days ago, an article on Variety‘s website came out stating how BBC is currently moving forward with a Doctor Who feature film with David Yates attached as the director. Seems cool enough, eh? But of course there are shades of gray (grey?) that go with this striking bit of news.

First bit to take notice of, is they want to turn this beloved ‘television’ franchise in to a film ‘franchise’. In doing so, they plan to start from scratch. But how far back do they want to do? In other scenario’s, a reboot (is this what they mean?) or a fresh start they can ignore facts. Much like Yates’ Harry Potter team with the Dumbledore character after the legendary actor Richard Harris sadly passed away, being succeeded by the awesome Michael Gambon. In that case, nobody cared, because his character was kept in line with the books. I think there’s a change of atmosphere when Gambon took over. You can see they changed from a magical lovey feeling in 1 and 2, to a more dark side in 3-7. This is all evident in the books though of course.

However, this is Doctor Who. And now we’re at the point where everybody loves Matt Smith. And if you don’t, you’re a liar. I was hesitant at first myself. But I do, I love the way he took on the role. And he has said it himself (or perhaps rumored), that he’d like to jump to the big screen. Maybe this is his chance? Maybe these feature films will give him the calling he needs and rightly deserves. It would keep things consistent. And as evident, they bring mention in the Variety article that they want a proper writer that will appeal to both the American and UK crowd. Why not keep Matt on board? It’ll hit two birds with one stone. I think if you have a Doctor in the show, and another Doctor on the big screen… there’d be a bit of confusion. Am I alone there? Sure us older folk can keep up (though we’ll have to grit our teeth). But the younger audience will see Matt on TV, but not in the movies.

As for the writer, I’m sure I won’t be the only one to say it. But I’d like nothing better than to see Mr. Neil Gaiman. I truly enjoyed his episode “The Doctor’s Wife.” It brought in a little old school Who, mixed in with new bits as well. And I think it was quite honestly the best written, and acted episode of the season. It was incredible! How could you not like it? Have to give a shout out to Michael Sheen on the voice acting in the episode as well! Such an amazing job well done. I’m fairly certain that he would work well with a production team on at least the first film. And together they could create a DW film for all Whovians to enjoy.

Who do you think should write this Doctor Who film? Leave your opinion in the comments below!

South Beach Has Cooled Off

There’s no team in clearer need of a QB and a leader than the Miami Dolphins. You can’t even make a case for the Colts or the Rams in this 2011 season. Sure there are many teams that have suffered from the shortened off-season. You have teams like the Cardinals, Eagles (yeah I’ll say it), and even perhaps a team like Cowboys. The teams here have something to prove. The Cards went out and put big money in to Kevin Kolb to be their “savior”. But I have to question that. I’m sure that a lot of people may have agreed with it. But I don’t. I’m not a Cards fan, obviously, but I really scratched my head. Kevin is a good athlete, but not a quarterback worth as much money as he got. But that’s not my point of this post.

I’ve been a Miami Dolphins fan for as long as I can remember. I remember watching the battles in the 90′s with Dan the Man, and I remember the most recent decade without him quite more vividly. We’ve tried so hard to replace his shoes in the years that he’s been gone. At one point he even returned to be a more behind the scenes role for the team. I can respect that, but his short stop back in South Beach was nothing compared to his current role as an analyst on Sunday morning television. Then you bring in another big fish to the aquatic team and we do nothing but flounder around. Still… trying to fill that void of “The next Dan Marino.” I’m not, and would never, try to demean the long vibrant legacy of Dan Marino. As a fellow PA native, I loved his career. I love his personality in and out of the game of football. But the Dolphins for the few years after his retirement struggled to find their niche. This is something that I believe the Patriots and Colts will struggle to do as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning move on to the next level in their lives.

I propose this, to the Miami Dolphins (and to the Colts and Patriots also), that instead of trying to replace your star and find “the next….[insert name]“. Instead of trying to replace this legend and future hall of famer, focus on trying to be the best. Sometimes that means you need to build your line and draft the Jake Long’s. With the season that Matt Ryan is having, maybe it’s turning out to be for the best.

But let’s bring times to a more current situation. You’re faced with a definite quarterback situation. You thought maybe, JUST MAYBE, Chad Henne could be the answer. And I’ll tell you what, Chad’s not been horrid. Sure the TD-INT ratio is in favor of the bad side by -6. But in the four years he’s been with the team I think he’s been mismanaged much similarly to how San Francisco’s quarterback Alex Smith has. We ignore the cannon that Chad has, and the underestimate the speedsters that are around the field next to Brandon Marshall. Brian Hartline has proven that he can get past the best defenders in the league, and Davone Bess can certainly get underneath. Chad goes down when Miami completely changes up their running game. There isn’t a clear running back in that backfield this year. Reggie Bush is essentially reinventing his career, becoming a more rushing back as opposed to the normal receiving back that teams were used to seeing in New Orleans. Daniel Thomas has yet to step in and become a back that we had hoped. When he’s healthy he’ll be a fine back that can operate within a tandem. There’s no doubt that Mr. Henne would’ve eclipsed the 10,000 passing yards milestone this season had he not been hurt but that’s not going to happen. After this season, the Dolphins are faced with a decision to make.

Do you keep both Matt Moore and Chad Henne around making them their starting guys? Thus, bypassing a QB in the first round, focusing on something like good defenders? I think not. I like and am very impressed with Matt Moore. This last game against the New York Giants was quite impressive and was lost on a defensive battle by both teams. The Giants showed something that the Dolphins have been lacking all season long. The ability to finish the game. A leader on both sides of the ball would be ideal. We’ll never know if the Dolphins were affected by the shortened off-season and I won’t allow anyone to chalk it up to that. We’re well passed the point where they can be in playing shape. I’ll let an 0-3 start go unnoticed. But when you’re still win-less going in to week 9, there’s something wrong.

There needs to be a couple of changes around the entire organization. Stephen Ross, as an owner, you need to regain full ownership. It’s okay to invite guests in like Marc Anthony, Jimmy Buffett, Fergie, Venus and Serena Williams (and whomever else), but keep your power. Nobody in this world has too much power that they can act leisurely with it. Second, Jeff Ireland has done nothing but [quite obviously] recruit former Cowboys. I’m honestly surprised that Tashard Choice wasn’t sought after when waived by Dallas. And I’ll be surprised if Rob Ryan’s name isn’t in the mix of things soon. However, I don’t buy it. The Cowboys weren’t winners when these talented guys were there, and they’re not now. A change of scenery doesn’t do everybody good. Mr. Ireland has, in my mind, over-welcomed his stay in South Beach. It’s time to move on. He’s had a great time with the organization and so far has managed to keep us afloat. By enough is enough, he had his chance.

Last, and sadly least, Coach Tony Sparano. I’m sorry, but it’s quite obvious that a coaching change is in need. But it didn’t happen after 0-3, 0-4, 0-5 and so on. A this point, you’re in to the second half of the season. I think Coach has some good ideas, and a good group of players. But there’s just nothing on the docket that is helping them perform better. We’re getting 55 minutes of football, and then five minutes of failure each game. That extra five minutes is where we lose the game. I think, as a lifelong fan, you give the Coach the benefit. It’s been endured thus far. It’s most likely worth it to hold strong. Keep ‘em in there til the end. Show future coaches that you’ll stick with them through the thick and then. I wouldn’t want to coach for a team that is trigger happy.

The reason I suggest they stick it til the end with Sparano, is because it’s not all on him. The players of course need to take the blame, but so does the management staff. Those like Jeff Ireland and his staff. The team has not made a big move in terms of acquiring good coaching staff or talented players since acquiring Brandon Marshall. Thanks for Reggie Bush. But we’re not in the game of acquiring one player per off-season. One player does not simply win a game, it takes 11 players on each side of the field to do so. And when you have 50-some guys on your game day roster, what is one person going to change? Now you’re facing a terrible situation where you need next year’s draft class to come in and assume the role of new blood and new leadership. If you draft guys like Andrew Luck or Matt Barkley, you need them to come in and be THE guy. He’s going to be your guy to come in and lead your team. Don’t make it a drama, make the decision and stand firm with it.

Dear @Bombfell, you’re doing it right!

I’m not quite sure if I’m late to the game, early, perhaps right on time? Who knows.. but the game I’m speaking of is being a member of the website Bombfell.com. For those unaware, this is a nifty company in good ol’ San Francisco, CA that offers men something they may or may not already have. What could it be? Why a great sense of style. As I said I’m still unsure if I’m ahead of the trend or what, but I decided to give this website a shot. It appealed to me for some reason. Perhaps it’s that I can’t be trusted to buy myself clothes other than a football jersey. But what the fine ladies at Bombfell do is hand pick some clothes specifically for you. You’ll get an item sent to you in the mail. From then on, you now have ten (10) days to try the clothing item on and try to decide if you like it or not. Don’t like? No big deal, you can send it back free of charge. If you DO like it (or keep it beyond the ten days) you’ll be paying a flat rate of $69. May sound expensive, but think about the time you never lost trying to pick something out. Think about it this way, perhaps something might be worth more than that? Maybe you’re getting a steal!

So about a week or two ago, I saw my friend Arthur mention this website. Curious, I clicked through and surfed through their page. I’m curious… so you’re going to pick clothes out for me? And then send them to me to try on. Seems a bit lazy, but I loved it. So I decided to sign up. Why the heck not? What do I have to lose? Upon signing up there was a little note section (optional) to send along to the staff at Bombfell. Being the nice guy I am, I just wished that everyone was having a great night. Thought I was a bit of a dork but here’s where they instantly received a good mark in my book… they responded! How long does it take to respond to an email these days? Cripes, I’m typing this and responding to one on my iPhone as this is happening.

Wasn’t more than about five minutes that I received an email from the lead stylist at Bombfell, Sarah, thanking me for the note!
Bombfell Email
Simple enough right? Well, it’s that little tiny thing that got me to stay. I initially had no real desire to be excited about this service. I honestly just wanted to sign up and see what this site was all about. As I said, I was curious. But after receiving that tiny little email, I was thinking to myself.. “Okay, you’re good. I’ll stay for a bit longer.”

It’s been just over a week since receiving that email and I’ve gotten another one letting me know that my first item is on it’s way! Oh man, I’m psyched! What could it be?! But here’s the thing, it’s nearly midnight as I’m writing this. So I’m tired.. a bit groggy.. and I just want sleep. So for this email to spark me awake enough to write this out, you must be doing something right! See for yourself…

Yeah, I clicked that link in the first sentence, and was thoroughly entertained. I loved it. Who doesn’t like a good cover of “Carry on My Wayward Son”? I sure loved it! You gave me more than just a tracking link to where the heck my new clothes are. Normally you just get a link tossed at you, or perhaps an robotic message saying “here’s your tracking info”. But no, you went above and beyond to make it a bit fun.

So cheers Bombfell! You are definitely doing it right. Let’s see if you can improve my style now.. I’m sure it won’t be too hard.
